My Mother Was Science Fiction is the first full length album from Mosaic Runes, released on Weisskalt Records.

Mosaic Runes is the independent electronic music project of Shane McCarthy. The album was written and recorded in McCarthy’s home studio north of Baltimore MD.

Using unsynced machines, synths, drum machines, field samples, record samples, percussion, computer software and multiple other electronic tools, the album was created during a 10 week span of early morning sessions from January to March 2023.

My Mother Was Science Fiction consists of 9 tracks flowing together with sprawling variations in emotion and landscape, abstractly drawing meanings found within religion, creation, life and death but as it might be perceived in parallel universes and science fiction narratives.

Like the planets to the solar system, the songs emanate different and occasionally volatile atmospheres but still orbit around the same central energy. Mosaic Runes’ signature essence of liminal spaces is ever-present.

The opening track Cradling the Golden Dawn exhales a peaceful tone for the first few songs as the listener arrives at each new place; greeted with comfort but left with lingering curiosity and a sense of uneasiness. Track 4, Acid Pool Baptism bewilders with an intense sonic assault on the traveler, a plunge into harsh landscapes and fractured sounds.

Throughout the rest of the album, we are shown the deeper elements of Mosaic Runes’ fictional universe with tracks diving into subterranean cold spaces and religious altars on ancient alien planets as the album closes with Gift of the Mosaic Order.

"An album not unlike Blackest Ever Black alumni Raime or Black Rain at their absolute prime . This album pulses through-out with influences that go beyond just electronic music. Hints of La Monte Young and Terry Riley live and breathe on this record. Tracks like "Footsteps in the Throne Room '' display a discipline of utilizing multiple beat patterns that goes even further than McCarthy's last single "Tetrahedron". "Gift of the Mosaic Order '' is a barn burner of a closer weaving everything from minimalist techno, to minimalist drum and bass. This truly is one of the most captivating, dense, and experimental electronic/dance records of the year." - Sean Gray (Fan Death Records, Accidental Guest, Is this Venue Accessible?, Birth (Defects)
