Signal/Prompt is an EP from Mosaic Runes and their third release with Weisskalt.

Mosaic Runes is the independent electronic music project of Shane McCarthy. The album was written and recorded in McCarthy’s home studio north of Baltimore MD between late November to mid December 2023.

The tracks explore communication as the web which binds all human beings together. Music as communication with self and other. How one directs the vast expanse of consciousness through music gear, with intuitively orchestrated sounds emerging, as if from the ether. Signal/Prompt is a sonic exploration of how it feels and sounds to speak without speaking.

Mosaic Runes:
"These 4 tracks were created this past Autumn in my home studio north of Baltimore MD. During this time, communication was critical in my life. There were beautiful things happening but also really ugly things happening. Communication was what allowed the beauty to grow and the unpleasant to recede. I considered communication in itself and the many ways we communicate with each other.

Sometimes and almost always, words are not enough and something else is needed. I spent nights reflecting on how I could communicate with myself better. It’s funny to think or say I need to make communication with myself better but it was true during that time.

When I sat down to make these tracks, I practiced a different type of mindfulness during the sessions than I normally would. Communicating with myself and working out problems with the sounds or feelings about the music.

Recently I read a novella relating to a family who had vacations in the mountains of Germany. While the family was there, the father had situations where he would be out of his body looking at himself and needing to communicate with himself, give direction, like a door. This really sparked some intense inspiration and thoughts around what I was thinking about. The book was “You Should Have Left”.

In short, I wanted to create some songs where I could leave the body and communicate with myself about songs I was writing about, centred around communication haha!

The songs were made using various pieces of gear (synths, drum machines, effects, sampler, tracker, live drums, guitar, computer, analogue multitrack, etc).

The names of the songs come from the concept of giving oneself a signal, sending signals out, communication without words. Prompt is giving oneself a prompt and following prompts without thought. That is, you have decided beforehand on the choice, made the prompt, thus eliminating the need to think about the choice." - Shane McCarthy
